DIA Design Intelligence Trend Report Launch Conference


On March 12th, 2023, the Secretary General of DIA, Wang Yun, officially released the "DIA Design Intelligence Trend Report" at the 7th DIA Award Ceremony. This trend report is based on the data mining and in-depth analysis of the DIA Database from 2016 to 2022. It mainly includes the DIA platform trend research report, the design ontology trend research report, and the design industry trend research report. The report shows that DIA is becoming an important innovation design global arena, open source intelligence library for innovation design, and leading innovation driving frontier. It also positions new tracks and new opportunities under the trend of the times through track expansion and the increase in the speed of award.

This is an era of great changes. From Turing to Hawking, from John McCarthy to Elon Musk, "designers" and dreamers of the times emerge one after another; they stand at the forefront of the world and lead mankind to the future built on digital technology and artificial intelligence. 


In this great era, writing books is still an important channel to convey ideas. Poet Pushkin once said, "The influence of people is short and weak, while the influence of books is extensive and far-reaching. "At the moment when a book is completed, it opens a double time node connecting the past and the future. 


Every year, DIA will publish a book "Design Yearbook", but this year we made a change. The team retrieved 270 documents including the 2022 Global Innovation Index released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), interviewed 205 experts, searched 43,000 cases, analyzed the DIA database containing millions of entries, and prepared a DIA Design Intelligence Trend Report in four months. The yearbook is static, a review of the DIA Award of the year, while the trend is dynamic, a prospect for future design.


The frequency resonance rate among innovative powers reaches as high as 84%, the intelligent design penetration rate is 72%, and 70 countries and regions took part in the DIA… All of these show that DIA is becoming an important global arena for innovative design.


The average annual growth of expert teams is 58%, the expansion rate of international workstations is 68%, and the coverage rate of top university think tanks stands at 85%... All of these show that DIA is becoming an important global open-source think tank for innovative design.


From 2,511 entries to 8,010 entries, from 12% to 24% in the proportion of new award winners to all entries, from 69% to 94% in the proportion of winner from top universities and enterprises to all the winners... All of these show that DIA is becoming an important global innovation-driven frontier.


In an age of intelligence, great changes are taking place in the underlying logic of industrial design. The perception of design details, infinite imagination, mixed computing power and the whole-chain creativity have become new important features, showing a new pattern of Design 4.0 characterized by human-computer symbiosis and virtual-real interaction.


Design, interweaving concept with technology, is rediscovering the greater value of the body as the only anchor point for perceiving the world. Beyond the traditional social division of labor, the cognitive model of design is being reconstructed from the primitive field of intelligence enhancement, the opening field of external devices to the creation field of infinite space. The dimension raising coefficient of DIA in tracks such as massive health,massive culture and massive equipment has reached 64%, 99% and 191% respectively, which further shows a new thinking model of design scenario with centrifugal force acceleration effect.


The track with the most growth power in the past seven years was topped by the "X" track with the most uncertainty, dynamics and fuzziness at an expansion growth rate of 8.62 times, and the top seven tracks with the most award winners are from health, entertainment, culture, X, education, medical care and equipment, which clearly shows the new track and new opportunities under the trend of the times.


The four major sectors of DIA - cultural innovation, life wisdom, industrial equipment and digital economy, are constantly integrated and intertwined with the tracks in fourteen vertical fields, showing an innovation matrix with new ideas, new technologies and new scenarios as the common trends from primitive to opening and creation.


After seven years of hard work, this report has condensed a large amount of design data and cases. Just like "DIA is not just an honor", we hope that this design white paper can give design contestants a competition reference, a case teaching material for design practitioners and a future enlightenment for innovative entrepreneurs.


"There is no limit to the trend of ambition." DIA will stick to our original aspiration and continuously capture the evolutionary posture of design intelligence in the changing times with permanent ambition.

In 2022, the participation rate of DIA from the top 10 countries of the Global Innovation Index was 100%; the participation rate of DIA from the top 50 countries of the Global Innovation Index was 84%.



3.DIA Award Ratio and Ranking


Since the 1st DIA, the proportion of international awards has been increasing year by year. The Yangtze River Delta, the Greater Bay Area, and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region have all ranked high in the national awards, reflecting the economic development pattern of innovation clusters in China.



4.DIA First-time Release


18.77% of original entries accounted for 47% of the top rankings. DIA has always emphasized overall innovation. DIA has become an important first release platform for design industry in terms of original works, technology applications and appearance modeling.



5.Design 4.0 New Form


Extracting the new form of Design 4.0 from the changes in the underlying logic of intelligent design, the subtle perception, infinite imagination, hybrid computing power and the creativity of the whole chain have become new important characteristics.
